Playing With Matches

I’VE BEEN PLAYING WITH MATCHES FOR YEARS. I make assemblages of multi-colored matches that I display with historical documents and photographs in a “one-room Cold War museum” called the Museum of Matches. When I work with matches I feel a sense of danger and risk, but also the imaginative excitement of a child playing with a toy. The imminent possibility of both creation and destruction is always at hand.

Dividing Light Measuring Darkness

I am participating in this group exhibition at Curious Matter:

"Photons first appeared ten seconds after the Big Bang, signaling the first light. In the Judeo-Christian tradition God separated light from darkness on the first day of Creation. In Greek Mythology Nyx (night) with her consort Erebos (darkness) gave birth to Hemera (day). In all of these systems, from ancient myth to modern science, light comes out of darkness. Light and darkness are separate entities, but dependent upon one another. With “Dividing Light Measuring Darkness,” Curious Matter explores our diverse human responses to the benign physical properties of light and darkness."

Naming The Animals

I am participating in the group exhibition Naming the Animals at Curious Matter.

In our collective effort to understand the world, we’re driven to name and catalog everything around us. From the detailed observations of prehistoric cave painters through modern ecology and zoology, humans have been compelled to describe and render the other living things that inhabit the earth. Not necessarily purely aesthetic or scientific, naming and cataloging can include the assignment of moral or metaphorical associations. Implicit in these actions is our desire to declare and understand ourselves.

The curator, Vincent Como selected two pieces of mine for inclusion in this exhibition.

This is from the curator's statement:

Expanding on the idea of the Psychopomp, both as a potential guide to the afterlife and in the Jungian sense as a mediator between conscious and unconscious states, I wanted to approach this exhibition as broadly as possible. To allow for the referencing of Familiars and Shamanic escorts as well as push the boundaries of the inherent idea of transition between states of being/matter/consciousness resulting in a diversity of thinking and actualization. The artists and works in the exhibition range from the subtle and mischievous to the direct and succinct with a varied material lexicon.
